Storage Conditions Vary by Region

Climate differences across Canada directly affect how and where boats should be stored. The Great Lakes region, Pacific coast, and the Prairies each present different temperature ranges and humidity conditions.

  • Ontario and Quebec: extended freeze periods requiring full winterization
  • British Columbia coast: milder winters but significant rainfall and moisture exposure
  • Alberta and Saskatchewan: extreme cold requiring engine antifreeze procedures
  • Atlantic provinces: salt-air corrosion risk alongside cold temperatures

Off-Season Storage: Key Decisions

Before placing a vessel in off-season storage, owners typically address four distinct areas.

Engine & Cooling Systems Flush raw-water cooling circuits, fog cylinders, change engine oil and gear lube to prevent water contamination during freeze cycles.
Hull & Exterior Wash, inspect for osmotic blistering, apply protective coatings where needed. Shrink-wrap or use a fitted cover rated for outdoor winter exposure.
Electrical & Electronics Disconnect and store batteries in a climate-controlled location, protect connections from moisture, and remove portable electronics.
Interior & Safety Gear Remove cushions, food items, and anything that can mold. Inspect and re-certify life jackets, flares, and fire extinguishers for the upcoming season.
